Custom Millwork in Hudson Valley, NY
The Timber Millwork Division produces custom cabinetry, built-ins, and furniture for renovation and new construction projects throughout the Hudson Valley. We operate three dedicated facilities: a custom cabinet shop in Marlboro, a furniture-making facility in New Paltz, and a 2,500 square foot finishing facility in Wallkill.
Every millwork project is designed by our in-house team, produced in our own facilities, and installed by our own crew — not sourced from a supplier and installed by a separate company. This end-to-end control over design, production, and installation is what allows us to match existing millwork precisely, hold tolerances that production manufacturers cannot, and deliver finished work that is consistent in quality with the rest of a Timber renovation.

Start Your ProjectWhy In-House Production Matters
Most woodworking for residential construction falls into one of two categories: stock products ordered from a manufacturer's catalog, or custom products ordered from an independent shop with a 10–14 week lead time and a separate installation crew. Both produce results that are adequate when the project is straightforward and expensive when it is not.
The Timber Millwork Division produces and installs. When a dimension changes during construction — because the framing is not exactly where the drawings showed, because a client changes the design, because a site condition creates a conflict — our cabinet shop produces the modification and our installation crew installs it. There is no supplier call, no reorder fee, no 4-week wait for a revised piece.
This is particularly important in renovation projects where existing conditions are never perfectly regular. A built-in bookcase that must fit between two walls that are not exactly parallel, on a floor that is not perfectly level — these are normal conditions in a Hudson Valley home built before 1990. Our millwork shop produces pieces that fit the actual conditions, not the theoretical dimensions.
The Finishing Process
Finish application is done at our 2,500 square foot finishing facility in Wallkill. Paint-grade cabinets receive sanding, high-build primer, additional sanding, and two topcoats — producing a factory-quality painted finish that is more durable and uniform than painting cabinets in place after installation.
Stain-grade cabinets receive hand or spray stain application, sealer coat, and topcoat (polyurethane, conversion varnish, or lacquer depending on the application). Conversion varnish is the most durable clear topcoat for kitchen applications — it cures chemically and is more resistant to moisture and cleaning products than standard polyurethane.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Timber produce millwork for projects outside of Timber renovations?
Yes. The Timber Millwork Division produces cabinetry, built-ins, and custom furniture for clients who are not engaged in a full Timber renovation — standalone millwork projects where the client wants a specific piece or room of built-ins produced and installed. Contact us to discuss your project.
What wood species does Timber work with?
White oak, red oak, hard maple, black walnut, cherry, hickory, poplar (for paint-grade applications), and other domestic hardwoods. Species selection is part of the design conversation — different species have different grain character, finishing characteristics, and price points.
How long does custom millwork take to produce?
Most custom cabinetry and built-in projects take 4–6 weeks from approved drawings to delivery. Custom furniture runs 6–10 weeks. For renovation projects, we coordinate production timing with the construction schedule so installation can proceed immediately when the construction sequence is ready.
How is custom cabinetry different from semi-custom or stock?
Stock cabinetry is manufactured in fixed sizes (typically in 3-inch increments) and modified to fit with fillers and scribes. Semi-custom uses the same fixed box sizes but allows more finish options. Custom cabinetry is built to the exact dimensions of your space from the first measurement — full-height panels, consistent reveals, and corners that were designed rather than filled.
