Custom Home Builder in Hudson Valley, NY

Timber Design + Build constructs fully custom homes throughout the Hudson Valley — from initial site assessment through final finishes. Co-founders Jeff Wiegmann and Chris Rall self-perform a significant portion of every build, including site work, framing, and finish carpentry through our in-house Millwork Division. No subcontracted handoffs on the phases that define the quality of your home.

We serve Ulster, Dutchess, Greene, and Sullivan counties. Every home is a one-off, built to its site, its architecture, and its owner.

What Sets a Timber Build Apart

Most general contractors in the Hudson Valley manage subcontractors. We manage the work directly. Self-performing key phases — site preparation, concrete, framing, finish carpentry, and custom millwork — gives us control over quality and schedule that a subcontractor-dependent model cannot match. When a detail is wrong, we fix it. When a timeline slips, we own it.

Our in-house design team uses Chief Architect software to produce detailed floor plans, elevations, and full 3D renderings before a single site permit is pulled. You see your home — walk through it digitally, adjust the flow, move a wall, change the window placement — before construction begins. This eliminates the expensive surprises that derail most custom home builds.

The result is a more predictable build experience: cleaner details, fewer change orders, and a finished home that matches what you approved in the design phase.

Our Custom Home Building Process

Step 1 — Preconstruction and Design: We begin with a detailed consultation to understand your goals, site conditions, budget, and timeline. Our design team produces floor plans, elevations, and 3D renderings using Chief Architect. We work through the design with you until it is exactly right before moving to permitting.

Step 2 — Permitting and Site Preparation: We manage all municipal permit applications and approvals. Site preparation — clearing, grading, excavation, and foundation — is self-performed by our crew, not outsourced to a sub.

Step 3 — Framing and Rough-In: Structural framing, window and door installation, and rough mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems installed and coordinated with our licensed trade partners.

Step 4 — Insulation, Drywall, and Exterior: Building envelope completion — insulation, air sealing, exterior siding, roofing, and waterproofing — before interior finishes begin.

Step 5 — Finish Work and Millwork: Interior finish carpentry, custom cabinetry and millwork from our in-house Millwork Division, flooring, tile, and fixture installation. This phase is where Timber's self-perform model creates the most visible difference.

Step 6 — Final Inspections and Walkthrough: We walk through the completed home with you, address any punch list items, and deliver a home that is ready to live in.

What is the minimum budget for a Timber custom home build?

Custom home construction in the Hudson Valley typically starts at $350–$400 per square foot for a well-specified new build. Total project budgets vary significantly based on site conditions, square footage, specification level, and finish choices. See our full cost breakdown guide for detailed ranges by category.

How long does a custom home take to build?

From design kickoff to certificate of occupancy, most custom homes we build take 12–20 months. Read our full timeline breakdown for phase-by-phase detail.

Do you work on lots we already own?

Yes. If you own land in the Hudson Valley and are ready to plan a custom home on it, we can begin with a site assessment. Read our land evaluation guide for what to consider.

What does "self-performing" mean and why does it matter?

Self-performing means our crew directly executes a significant portion of the construction work rather than subcontracting it. Learn more: What Does Self-Performing Mean in Construction?

Can you handle both the design and the construction?

Yes. Timber operates as a design-build firm. Read our comparison: Design-Build vs. Architect + General Contractor.
