Custom Cabinetry vs. Stock Cabinets: What to Choose for Your Kitchen Remodel
The cabinetry decision is the single most impactful choice in a kitchen remodel — it determines the cost, the timeline, the look, and the functional quality of the finished kitchen. There are three tiers: stock cabinets, semi-custom cabinets, and fully custom cabinets. Each serves a different budget and a different set of requirements.
Stock Cabinets
Stock cabinets are mass-produced in standard sizes and finishes. They are available quickly — typically 1–3 weeks — and cost $150–$350 per linear foot installed.
Best for: Budget-conscious remodels, rental properties, kitchens with standard dimensions, and projects where speed matters more than custom fit. Limitations: Fixed sizes (3-inch increments), limited finish options, filler strips required for non-standard dimensions, standard construction (particleboard box, thermofoil or veneer door).Semi-Custom Cabinets
Semi-custom cabinets offer more size options, finish choices, and interior configurations than stock. They are built to order from a catalog of options. Lead time: 4–8 weeks. Cost: $300–$650 per linear foot installed.
Best for: Mid-range remodels where some customization is needed but full custom is not justified by the budget or the design.Custom Cabinets
Custom cabinets are designed and built specifically for your kitchen — every dimension, material, finish, and interior configuration is specified to your requirements. Lead time: 6–12 weeks. Cost: $500–$1,200+ per linear foot installed.
Best for: High-specification remodels, kitchens with non-standard dimensions or unusual layouts, historic homes requiring matching millwork profiles, and homeowners who want cabinetry that fits the space exactly.Timber Design + Build's Millwork Division produces custom cabinetry in our Marlboro facility — designed by our team, built by our craftspeople, and installed by our crew. The same organization that designs your kitchen layout builds and installs the cabinets.

When Custom Cabinets Are Worth the Investment
Custom cabinets are worth the investment when: the kitchen has non-standard dimensions that stock cabinets cannot accommodate without excessive filler, the design requires specific wood species, finishes, or profiles that stock and semi-custom catalogs do not offer, the home has historic millwork that the new kitchen should match, or the homeowner wants cabinetry quality that will last 30+ years.
When Stock or Semi-Custom Makes More Sense
Stock or semi-custom cabinets make more sense when: the kitchen dimensions fit standard cabinet sizes, the budget priorities are elsewhere (appliances, countertops, structural changes), or the project timeline requires faster delivery than custom fabrication allows.
The In-House Advantage
When the cabinet maker and the general contractor are the same company — as with Timber Design + Build — coordination issues between cabinet fabrication and construction disappear. If a plumbing rough-in shifts 2 inches during demolition, the cabinet design adjusts immediately. See: Design-Build vs. Kitchen Dealer.
